Swansea Council

Wales' second most populous city is the coastal city of Swansea. This city and county is situated on the South Wales Coast, in an area that includes the Gower Peninsula. Swansea was formerly a township, which attained county borough status in 1889. The city is bounded by two unitary authorities: to the east, Neath Port Talbot, to the north, Carmarthenshire.

The Swansea Council is currently the governing body for the city and county, as well as Gower and the rest of the surrounding area. The council has 36 electoral wards that are represented by 72 councillors. It is currently under the Liberal Democrats, with other group affiliation like Labour, Liberal, Conservative, etc.

Between the years of 1996 and 2004, the Swansea Council was under the control of Labour. Through the alliance of the Conservatives and Independents, the council became under the control of the Liberal Democrats coalition.

The first charter granted in Swansea was to give it the status of a borough, thereby separating it from Glamorgan county. In 1996, Swansea became a unitary unit, merging with the Lliw valley, and became the city and county of Swansea.

The city of Swansea is divided into a total of 36 electoral wards, which are mostly parishes and communities, each having an elected council. The city mayor, is a senior member of the elected Swansea Council. The mayor is The Right worshipful the Lord Mayor of Swansea, and officially resides in the Mansion House in Ffynone.
